I was recently talking to a youngin who told me that Nas cant sale 500,000 records anymore and that this is the trap era….bla bla bla.
I have heard people call certain kind of music commercial and other kinds well i don’t know even know what they call it. But in marketing Numbers is what people look at, and like they say…Numbers don’t lie.
Yes trap music is what people listen to these days, no doubt! But look at the Numbers… Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and J.cole are some of the biggest/ highest selling rap artist of today… They do very huge Numbers yet they are not trap artists, a couple of years ago, no one believed RnB will ever be major around here, But boom out of the blues came Styl Plus ( where are they?)… The rest like they say is history, to this day a lot of the so called commercial artists have not been able to do the Numbers they did over 10 years ago. I can give you a lot of instances….
The fact that we are a population of around 180 million is the biggest strenght we have…. There is no way 1% which is 1.8million cannot support the other kind of music if we try to just focus on marketing the non commercial music to that population.
Don’t be cowed into believing that if your music is not commercial enough, cos are blessed to have a voice that will melt hearts…..some of us need a little bit of that cos we heart no get feelings… Lol…we all can’t be mad like Terry G be injecting folks with noise like Small Doctor.
M.I and co used rap music to do things we never really thought was possible.
Inbetween who get p.s 4 him nor dey use again.
